First Aid at work - What do we need?

In this blog I'm going to take a look at first aid,  the number of first aiders you have and the facilities and equipment that you actually need for your workplace.

One question I am asked on a regular basis is “So how many first Aiders do I need then Bob?”

You need to think about a lot of different things to come up with the number of first aiders. How many people are there in your workplace? Does your company work on shift patterns? How high is the hazard level that employees are likely to be subjected to? Are you working remotely or a lone worker?

Another question I get is 'What needs to be in my first aid kit?' Again there is no mandatory list that each workplace must have, it is mostly down to the level of risk within your workplace. The HSE do give a suggested list of what should be in most first aid kits but your workplace could have more specific needs.

One of our clients has particularly dangerous chemicals used in the manufacturing process because of this they have a specific first aid room which is stocked with all relevant equipment they need should an emergency occur. They also have the correct procedures and systems in place to ensure they can react to any emergency should they need to.

Another thing to think about is periodic checks on your first aid kits to ensure what you need is there in the case of an emergency. It can be amazing how quickly supplies can dwindle down especially is no-one is keeping a check!
